All the time, people say that they are happy to have faced their challenges, their setbacks, their most devastating moments. They say that, because of those challenges, they are stronger, wiser, more appreciative of everything in their life.
I think what people mean when they say this is — they have more depth, more integrity, more of a reason to search for something greater than themselves.
They have witnessed something in that moment, when their world is falling apart, that is so unbearable they quite literally can’t rely on situations and things to bring them what they want — the only option is to pray and to love.
In those moments, you’re left with only the sky above you, the earth beneath you, and the connection you have with yourself. It becomes so simple in those moments of devastation.
I think people look back and they are happy for these times because for a moment, they take a break from attempting to control an uncontrollable world. They just sit back and surrender and there’s a weird sense of calm and easiness that follows.
Devastations are a blessing. They can remind us of the only thing that was ever “real” in the first place.
